Stewards Have an Oopsie & CBD Cures Naughty Horses?

Tons of fun stories in this edition...

Runner Disqualified After Stewards Shown Wrong Race

OOPS! — New Mexico officials have issued an apology to bettors after a horse was disqualified at Sunland Park following an inquiry that allegedly involved the viewing of footage from a different race.

The incident occurred at a quarterhorse meeting on March 3, when A Separate Star finished second but was demoted to fourth. According to reports, stewards may have been shown the head-on replay of the previous race, which featured a horse from the same stall veering into an opponent.

No inquiry was held at the time because the offending horse did not place. A new inquiry is set to take place on March 9, and it is likely that the original finishing order will be reinstated, with prize money being redistributed accordingly. However, this will provide little consolation to those who had placed bets on A Separate Star.

Large Betting Teams Are At It Again!

Large betting teams which often place their bets at the last second via industry-enabled, batch bet-placement tools – often called Computerized Robotic Wagering groups (CRWs) – have been restricted from placing win pool bets within two minutes of the start of races at the New York Racing Association (NYRA) tracks (Aqueduct, Belmont and Saratoga) since July 2021. But that doesn’t mean they’re not playing elsewhere.

From the evidence we have seen, TIF does not believe CRWs comprise one-third of the win pool, but we expect they are over one-third of some tracks’ exotic pools, particularly pick fours and pick fives, bets which are routinely marketed to mainstream customers

The History Of Historical Horse Racing

Do you know what a Historical Horse Racing machine is? Probably not — even if you’ve sat down and gambled at one.

Like pull tabs and other obscure forms of legal gambling, Historical Horse Racing (HHR) machines can only be found in a handful of states — in this case, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, New Hampshire, Virginia, and Wyoming. To the untrained eye, present-day HHR machines are indiscriminate from slot machines. But because the success of an HHR wager is dictated by the result of an actual horse race — often from the distant past, at a track far, far away — and the prize money is doled out from a parimutuel pool, the slot lookalikes are widely considered to be games of skill.
